MLA, MLC, Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha Seats State Wise


The member of Lok Sabha or the Rajya Sabha is called a Member of Parliament (MP) and the Member of Legislative Assembly of States is shortly called an MLA and the Member of Legislative Council of States is shortly called an MLC. Each state will have certain number of MLA, MLC and MP seats in India. So, it is very important to know the MLA, MLC, Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha seats state wise distribution. Ladakh is the largest Lok Sabha constituency in India by area whereas Malkajgiri in Telangana is the largest in terms of voters. The smallest Lok Sabha constituency in India by area is Chandni Chowk in Delhi whereas Lakshadweep is the smallest in terms of voters. Uttar Pradesh has the highest number of MLA, MLC, Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha seats in India.



There will be elections for Lok Sabha and the State Legislative Assembly, also called Vidhan Sabha, for every 5 years and there will be elections for Rajya Sabha and the State Legislative Council, also called Vidhan Parishad, for every 2 years as 1/3rd members of these houses retire every 2 years and their tenure is 6 years. There are only 6 Vidhan Parishad states in India namely, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.

MP, MLA and MLC Seats of States of India

At present, the total number of Lok Sabha seats in India is 543, out of which 412 seats are meant for general candidates, 84 seats are Scheduled Caste (SC) reserved Lok Sabha seats and 47 seats are Scheduled Tribe (ST) reserved Lok Sabha seats. So, the required minimum Lok Sabha seats in India to form government at the Centre is 272. The Lok Sabha seats state wise after delimitation in 2008 remained the same for each state and the total seats also remained at 543, which can be changed only after 2026, but internal boundaries for Lok Sabha constituency seats within the states changed significantly. The 2008 delimitation was done based on the 2001 Census.

The total Rajya Sabha seats in India at present are 245. The President of India nominates 12 members to Rajya Sabha. The Anglo-Indian reserved seats in the Lok Sabha and the State Legislative Assemblies were abolished by the 104th Constitutional Amendment Act, 2019.

The total MLA seats in India, in different states and Union territories combined together, are 4123. If we consider state wise MLA seats in India, Uttar Pradesh has the highest Assembly seats in India, numbering 403 and Sikkim has the lowest Assembly seats in India, numbering 32. Union Territory wise, Jammu & Kashmir has the highest MLA seats, numbering 95 (including 5 nominated by Lieutenant Governor) + 24 (reserved for POK) and Puducherry has the lowest MLA seats in India, numbering 30.
